Charles Bickford

Actor Charles Bickford died November 9, 1967. He was 78.

Bickford was born January 1, 1889 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He began his acting career in 1914, playing burlesque theaters.

After serving in World War I, Bickford made his debut on Broadway in 1919. An acting career in Hollywood began in 1929.

His first film was a Cecil B. DeMille production entitled Dynamite in 1929. The 1930 movie Anna Christie, co-starring Greta Garbo, helped make him a star.

Bickford went on to appear in more than 60 movies, including Little Miss Marker with Shirley Temple in 1934, and strong character roles in The Babe Ruth Story (1948), Jim Thorpe, All American in 1951, A Star is Born (1954) and The Big Country in 1958.

Bickford was nominated three times for Best Supporting Actor but never won.

Shortly before his death, he began appearing in a regular role on the television western, The Virginian, from 1966-67.

Bickford died in Boston, Massachusetts on November 9, 1967.
